1 will always take the ball coming up the court and take the opponent to the right of 2 and to the left of 3 (Diagram 1).
When the ball goes to either wing, 1 assumes a help position below the line of the ball (Diagram 3).
When the ball goes into the right corner (Diagram 5), 1 must deny the pass along the baseline. If no one is there, he can move up and look for the pass out.
When the ball is being trapped in the left corner (Diagram 6), 1 must always deny the pass out of the corner.
3 must always take the man to the right of 1 (Diagram 1).
If the ball is on the right wing (Diagra 3), 3 assumes help position in the lane, pointing to the ball and to his man - the player to the right of 1's man.
If 3's man goes through as the ball comes down the court (Diagram 8), 3 must go to the lane and push 4 toward the next offensive player in the imaginary circle.
If 1's man dribbles to the left wing where there is no perimeter player, as in Diagram 9, 3 must run-and-jump, yelling "GO" and pushing 1 toward the next player to his left.
NOTE: 3 will not run-and-jump if he is guarding a perimeter player in the corner as shown in Diagram 7.
3 will always go down and trap the ball in the left corner if 4 is on the ball as in Diagram 10.
When the ball is passed back out of the trap (Diagram 11), 3 will stay with the man in the corner.
2 will guard the man to the left of 1 (Diagram 1).
2's responsibilities are exactly like those of 3 whenever the ball is at the top of the key or at the wings.
5 will always guard the ball in the right corner. If 2 is guarding the man in the corner and the ball is passed there, as shown in Diagram 12, 5 will run-and-jump. 5 yells "GO" and pushes 2 outside, where he can deny the ball out of the corner.
When the ball is trapped in the short-corner, as in Diagram 5, 2 must move to the elbow and look for the steal. 2 will take the weak side when the ball is being trapped in the left corner, as shown in Diagram 6.
5 will guard anyone to the left of 2 in the imaginary circle in the area of the lane (Diagram 1) and always take the man in the right corner if he has the ball.
When 2 is covering the ball in the right corner (Diagram 12), 5 must run-and-jump -- yelling "GO" and pushing 2 up toward the next opponent to the right.
5 must play straight up on the man in the corner, giving up the baseline without being too obvious. Diagram 13. If the man with the ball drives to the basket. 4 will move out and trap the ball with 5. 3 will move over and front the low post.
When the ball is on the left wing or in the left corner, 5 will guard the man between 2 and 4 in the imaginary circle (Diagrams 6 & 10).
4 will guard the man to the right of 3 in the area of the lane and the left corner, Diagram 1.
4 must never push 3 off in the left corner. If 4 is guarding the man in the left corner, and the man receives the ball (Diagram 10), 3 must come down and trap.
If the ball is passed out of the trap, as in Diagram 11, 3 must stay with the man in the corner and 4 must move over to the next man in the imaginary circle, who probably will be in the low post, and push off 5, as shown in Diagram 11.
When the ball is in the right corner (Diagram 4), 4 will take the man on the block. If the corner man beats 5 to the baseline (Diagram 13), 4 will step out and double the ball with 5.
When the ball is on the right wing, 4 will guard the man between 5 and 3 in the imaginary circle (Diagram 3).
